Open-Water Swimming

Go jump in a lake–or an ocean–and see why the best swimming workouts aren’t taking place in the pool.

On a gorgeous afternoon last summer, it hit me that something was seriously wrong with my fitness regimen. The temperature was in the high 80s, the sky cloudless–it was, in short, a great day for swimming. But I was heading inside, to a basement-level concrete tank to subject my hair and my rapidly lading suit to yet another hour of chlorine saturation. Somewhere midlap I thought, I could be in the lake. Although I spend every summer weekend at a house near Lake Wononskopomuc in northwestern Connecticut, I rarely do anything more energetic than dip my toes in the water.

The first time I took the plunge, I felt liberated

No walls to crash into, no lane lines to obey, no chemical smell offending my senses. But euphoria was quickly replaced by fatigue. I always knew that swimming was hard work, but it’s even tougher when you’re out in the middle of a lake with no place to pause and catch your breath.

Still, there is a lure to the open water that’s irresistible, and I’m not the only one who thinks so: On nice weekends, there are so many swimmers in my lake that it feels like a shipping channel in the Bosporus. Competitively, too, open water has taken off: The annual one-mile La Jolla Rough Water Swim (the Boston Marathon of open-water events) attracts more than 2,000 competitors, while entries last year in the Manhattan Island Foundation’s Great Hudson River Swim (2.8 miles from the 79th Street Boat Basin to Chelsea Piers) doubled from the previous year, to more than 100 participants. Triathletes routinely practice in open water, since most races include a swim in a lake or an ocean.

In a wall-less water world, “you’re not a pinball going from one end of the pool to the other,” says Rick Walker, coach of the United States Open Water team. “You’re talking about a continuous swim.” That, he notes, is what makes open water a better workout than pool swimming. “It’s the best aerobic activity because it’s constant. A mile of open-water swimming equals roughly three miles of jogging.” Plus, it’s a whole lot harder to get lazy.

Whether you’re in a pool, a lake or the Atlantic, the basic freestyle skills remain the same. Marcia Cleveland, who’s swum across the English Channel and around Manhattan, makes the analogy to trail running versus running on a track. A pool is as smooth and obstacle-free as a track, while a lake or an ocean has waves, fish, boats and other hazards that can trip you up. One of open water’s bigger challenges is simply trying to swim a straight line. On my first swims, I ended up tacking across the lake, veering off to the right, then overcompensating back to the left. Most people pull to one side as they swim. To find out which side you favor, get in a pool without lane lines, swim–carefully–with your eyes closed and see where you end up after a length. Practice pulling equally on both sides. According to Walker, the trick to .staying on track in the open water is to pick a landmark in front of you–such as a building or a buoy–and look up every 10 to 12 strokes to make sure you’re still heading for it. “The biggest misconception I find is that people buy into the idea of diet food and non-diet food, as if anything with fat grams is bad,” Harper says. The solution isn’t to stop eating but to eat exactly what you want, within reason. You would rarely find a Frenchwoman who eats nothing but salad all day and then pigs out on a brownie sundae the size of a boat. By allowing yourself the satisfaction of good food at every meal and not declaring certain foods off-limits, you won’t be so tempted to down an entire carton of ice cream in one sitting.

For women who exercise vigorously and routinely, chronic deprivation is not only depressing but also counterproductive. Operating at a caloric deficit causes fatigue and contributes to the burning of muscle rather than fat; in fact, studies show it boosts body-fat percentage by slowing the metabolism, according to Dan Benardot, Ph.D., co-director of Georgia State University’s Laboratory for Elite Athlete Performance.

Benardot studied 28 elite female gymnasts and found that those who consumed only 1,300 calories per day had a higher percentage of body fat than those who consumed up to 2,200 calories. In a follow-up study, Benardot found that athletes who ate small amounts throughout the day also fared better in terms of calorie burning than those who opted to starve during the day and then later stuff themselves. “The bottom line,” Benardot says, “is that you can’t perform well and eat like a neurotic, weight-obsessed person.”

So if avoiding food is making us fatter and unhappier, the solution seems obvious: Eat more, feel (and look) better. In other words, eat like a kid again–when food was all about fun, not fat grams. Here are the top six foods everyone should bring back to the table.

Not only is fat necessary to assure sufficient energy, it’s the package in which the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K are delivered. Fats stay in the stomach longer than carbohydrates, making us feel satisfied, Benardot adds. Most important, fat makes food taste good.
